Afghanistan Refugee and Resettlement Experience

A CAMO (Community and Military Outreach) Program offering

Husband and wife, Najib Azad and Sarwat Najib, were among the throngs of Afghanistan civilians who had to flee to the United States during the withdrawal of U.S. forces and fall of Kabul in August 2021. They will be speaking about their experience on August 6 at 6pm.

Najib Azad is a well-known face to those following Afghanistan news: he was the press secretary and/or spokesman of Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the former Afghan president, and a senior political and legal advisor to NAMSA/NATO, a senior policy advisor at U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan. He has also been a political, legal, and social analyst, commentator, and expert for various news organizations, including VOA, BBC, Al-Jazeera, India Times, WION, DW, WION, Radio Liberty, and others. Azad holds a BBA, MBA, MA, LL. B-LAW (JD) and Post Juris Doctoral degrees.​ He is a well-known author of many books and articles. Besides being an author, Azad is a writer, columnist, researcher, analyst, lawyer, and faculty at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. 

Sarwat Najib owned Afghanistan’s most famous fashion brand, Shamla Fashion. She also worked as the managing graphic designer for Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and worked as the director of a women’s empowerment program at Focus Afghanistan, a nonprofit organization established by Sarwat and her husband. Sarwat holds two Honors: a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and a second one in Mass Communication.

After settling in Wisconsin, she and her husband established a U.S. 501(c)(3) Focus Development Organization that has been doing incredible work.
