Freedom Celebration Day at the Highground Saturday, June 29th Food – Raffles – Music – Fireworks!

On Saturday, June 29th, The Highground is hosting a spectacular family-friendly, free-admission event. Freedom Celebration Day begins includes a WWII D-Day Living History display; an enormous Raffle event; Homeless Veteran Collection Drive; Food; Music and Fireworks!

The WWII Living History, coordinated for the Highground by Troy Buddenhagen of La Crosse, will focus on D-Day. There will be displays of the type of military items that would have been present on that day 75 years ago and there will be uniformed presenters speaking to visitors on the experiences of the 4th Infantry Division at Utah Beach and the 1st Inf. Div. at Omaha Beach. The Living History “camp” and presenters will be ready to welcome visitors from 10am – 6pm.

The Kokosz family, from Illinois, have been stalwart, generous supporters of the Highground for years, bringing an ever-increasing raffle here each Fall, with all proceeds going to The Highground. They have selected Freedom Celebration Day for the raffle this year and have the largest raffle ever! There will be 70 raffle baskets, additional Silent Auction items and a number of very valuable Grand Prizes raffled off. The raffle will be held rain or shine with tickets at VERY reasonable prices. The Kokosz Family Raffle will begin at 10am and winning tickets will be drawn and announced at 6:30pm. There are baskets and prizes that suit everyone’s interests from sporting goods, outdoor items, “tech” baskets; cooking; household décor and more, to Grand Prizes of a handmade quilt and a 6-person tent! The Kokosz family will also be serving chili & hot dogs from 10am – 4pm.
With the help of Trunkel Trailers, The Highground has obtained an enclosed trailer that makes it possible to expand The Highground’s collection efforts for homeless veterans needs to a year-round effort. A goal of Freedom Celebration Day is to fill the trailer with donated items. The Highground will be accepting donations of packages of new socks and underwear, small personal toiletries (travel size), sleeping bags, and disposable hand warmers with expiration dates that are after January 2020. These items will be distributed quickly to homeless veterans and veterans in need in many different local areas.

Hardee’s of Neillsville, Colby and Medford have once again raised money through their “Share Nights” to fund The Highground Fireworks! In addition, Hardee’s will have a food tent at Freedom Celebration Day from 4pm – 9pm, with all proceeds going to the Highground. The next “Share Night” to raise funds for the fireworks will be at the Hardee’s in Neillsville, Medford and Colby on Thursday, June 20th from 4pm – 8pm.

Red Higgins & Freedom Train, a “Northwood’s” favorite country music band, will be performing at The Highground from 5pm – 6:30pm. Red and the band will perform classic country songs and keep the crowd going with their fun style and energy. To see more about Red & Freedom Train, go to redhiggins.com
