About the Museum
An educational center was part of the original vision for The Highground. The center would educate its visitors about the cost of war, “the human cost.” In 2010, the learning center became a reality.
Today, The Highground Museum is gaining almost double the space for displaying exhibitions by retaining the original gallery space and obtaining new gallery space thanks to the building expansion project (currently underway). The Museum’s mission is to provide education on the human cost of war. This is accomplished by creating (and obtaining on loan) exhibitions of war and military service experiences, military history and issues brought on by military service including: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), military sexual trauma (MST), Veteran suicide awareness and prevention, agent orange exposure and more. Many times, the exhibits bring the “story behind the artifact” of items that have been donated to the Museum by Veterans and families. We tell the real story, the human story, about the parts of history that many people only see as a cold artifact or chapter in a history book.
The Highground Museum creates many of its own exhibitions and memorial displays. Projects that are currently underway are “We Were There: Vietnam War” and “The History of the Highground.”
