The Paper Wall Vietnam Veterans Tribute:

The Highground’s Learning Center is featured The Paper Wall during the Vietnam Veterans Tribute, running March 1, 2012 – April 30, 2012.

The Paper Wall is a collection of newspaper obituaries and stories about the Wisconsin Vietnam KIA’s. The Paper Wall is a collaborative project of Wisconsin’s libraries, genealogical societies and historical societies, and was completed and presented for the first time at LZ Lambeau in May 2010. It became a traveling exhibit in 2011.

Mary Jane Herber, of the Local History and Genealogy Department of the Brown County Library, in Green Bay says “The Paper Wall is meant to show the reality of war, the ultimate sacrifice, and the families and communities that were left without the promise that each of these casualties may have provided our society.”

Many libraries and societies participated, including Marshfield Public Library, the Marshfield Area Genealogical Group, Marathon County Public Library, Marathon County Genealogical Society, the L.E. Phillips Public Library in Eau Claire, the Chippewa Falls Public Library and many individuals and librarians who provided time and expertise.
The Paper Wall was displayed at the State Capitol, in Madison during Veterans Week in November 2010.

It is displayed in panels by county, and engulfs115 liner feet of space. The creators have currently collected information on over 1100 of Wisconsin’s Vietnam KIA’s.

Along with The Paper Wall we also had memorabilia on loan from area Vietnam Veterans, two DVD movies of converted slides taken in Vietnam by Michael Olson and Leonard Frye while they were serving their tours there, and a very special collection of information entitled “The Final Bridge” by Steve Conto. Steve has spent the last 10 years collecting the burial site information on our Wisconsin Vietnam KIA’s. Not only has he collected this information but he has compiled it into a wonderful resource guide for all to use to locate these heroes. Steve also visits and tends each of the gravesites, photographs them and writes a personal paragraph about each one.
