Sgt. Louis A. Griese, 30, of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., died Oct. 31, 2007 in Tikrit, Iraq, of wounds suffered north of Samarra when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

Louis spent his early life in Kewanunee County, attending school there. His father, John Harold Griese, a Korean War veteran, passed away in 1982, and Louis moved to Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin in 1995 with his mother after she remarried. A quiet, soft-spoken teenager, he graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1996 and enlisted in the Army less than a year later.

He completed basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and then served three years in Hawaii and Korea. After that came his first two tours of duty in Iraq. He was serving his third tour of duty in Iraq with the Army's 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

He had been in the Army for 12 years. Louis married Stephanie Tate on March 15, 2002 in Killeen, Texas. They lived near or on the base at Fort Campbell, Kentucky since their marriage.

Louis was an expert with the M4 carbine, earned the Combat Infantryman Badge; Expert Infantryman Badge, Air Assault Badge, the Army Achievement Medal five times, the Army Good Conduct medal three times, the National Defense Service Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon; Army Service Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon.
