Michael J Wendling

MAYVILLE – SPC Michael J. Wendling, 20, of W2419 Allen Road, Mayville, lost his life on Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, in service to his country in Iraq.

SPC Michael J. Wendling was born on Jan. 3,

1985, at St. Agnes Hospital, Fond du Lac. He was baptized on that same day. His baptism was reaffirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church on March 3, 1985. He is the youngest of four children of Randall and Carrie Wendling.

Michael attended pre-school and kindergarten at St. John Lutheran School, Mayville. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School in the town of Theresa. He was active in many sports during those years. Michael renewed his baptismal vows at his Confirmation on May 2, 1999, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in the town of Theresa. Michael’s confirmation verse was ‘Then Jesus said to those which believed on him “If you continue in my word, then you are my disciple indeed. And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make your free.” John 8:31 & 32.

Michael attended Mayville High School. He was a member of the DECA Club. He participated in football, basketball, baseball and golf. He graduated in June 2003. He enlisted in the Army National Guard while in high school at the age of 17. He was a student at UW-Milwaukee until he was called up to active duty in May 2005. Michael served in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, Co. C, 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry.

Michael is survived by his parents, Randall and Carrie Wendling, Mayville; two sisters, Jennifer (Nathan) Augustine, Adams, Minn., and Angela, Milwaukee; one brother, Mark, Wauwatosa; his paternal grandmother, Esther Wendling; his maternal grandparents, Vernon and Patricia Neuman, Eden; his dear friend, Aleana Strook, Mayville, and her parents, Scott and Cheri Strook, Mayville; aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Reinhold Wendling and his great-grandparents.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, (River Church), town of Theresa, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Mark Berlin will officiate.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Mayville High School gymnasium, 500 N. Clark St., Mayville, from 5 to 9 p.m., and also on Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 9 to 11 a.m., at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, (River Church), town of Theresa. Burial will be in Immanuel Cemetery, town of Theresa, with graveside military rites conducted by the Wisconsin Army National Guard.

A scholarship fund will be established in Michael’s name.

The Koepsell Funeral Home, 301 N. Walnut St., Mayville, is serving the family.

SPC Wendling’s awards include The Bronze Star, The Purple Heart Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, The Iraqi Campaign Medal, The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, The Army Service Ribbon, The Combat Infantry Badge and two awards of the Wisconsin Wright Medal.
