The Highground has received many “calls for help” from spouses, family members and friends of Veterans who are having difficulty managing PTS (post-traumatic stress).
These Veterans’ loved ones are seeking resources and/or a group to speak with; most importantly, they are looking for a place to share their fears as well as learn from others who are going through a similar situation and from those who have “been there.”
The Highground will be holding an initial Family Support Group for PTS at The Highground Museum on Sunday, May 15 at 2pm. Michael Orban, Vietnam Veteran, author and founder & co-host of the ‘Stigma Free Vet Zone’ Podcast (orbanfoundationforveterans.org) will be the guest speaker at 2pm and then available afterward for questions and one-on-one conversation. Veterans, families and friends are encouraged to attend to learn more about destigmatizing post-traumatic stress so that management and healing can begin for the Veterans and their loved ones.
This is not a professional counseling event. It is a gathering for those who are interested in learning more about PTS resources that are available for families. It presents an opportunity for attendees to make connections with others who are or have been, “in their shoes”; and it is a place to connect with a peer-support system that can help during times when a person may feel alone in their loved one’s struggle with PTS.
One of the biggest hurdles to an individual or family managing PTS can be that feeling of being alone. This family support group will bring a community together around those who are struggling.
This will be a confidential and safe space. RSVP’s are appreciated (to ensure we have sufficient resource materials and food) but not mandatory. To learn more or RSVP, send an email to Theresa at museum@thehighground.us or call 715-743-4224.
The Highground is located at W7031 Ridge Rd, Neillsville WI 54456.
