SSG Amy S. Krueger, 29, died on November 5, 2009 at Ft. Hood, TX, doing what she loved, proudly serving her country. She was born on August 7, 1980 in Sheboygan, daughter of Jeri (Rief) Krueger and David Diem. Amy was a 1998 graduate of Kiel High School. After High School she attended UW Sheboygan. Immediately after the events of September 11, 2001 she put her schooling on hold to enlist in the U.S. Army in support on the war on terrorism. After basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo she was stationed in San Antonio, TX were she graduated as a Mental Health Specialist. In 2003 she was deployed to Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan in support of “Operation Enduring Freedom.†She returned home in the summer of 2003 and then continued her schooling at UW Sheboygan, receiving an Associates Degree in Arts & Science. During that same period of time she also graduated from LTC’s EMT program and with honors from the CNA program at LTC. In 2008, while pursuing her Bachelors Degree in Psychology at UW Whitewater Amy volunteered for another mission to Afghanistan. On October 11, 2009 she left for that tour of duty and was currently at Ft. Hood, TX preparing for deployment in mid December. Amy was a member of St. Peter’s UCC in Kiel.
She was the first female member of the Kiel VFW Post 6707. She was an active athlete at Kiel High School and UW Sheboygan. Amy “Kruegs†always enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, shooting pool, playing sheepshead, being social and lived every day to the fullest. She was on 2 softball teams this summer and 1 volleyball team. One of her softball teams took 1st place at a state tournament in Sparta. Survivors include her parents Jeri Krueger and David Diem both of Kiel, her adoptive father; Mark (Denise) Krueger of Springfield,MO, her sister Jessica, her brother; Casey both of Kiel. a step brother, Ryan Turba, step sisters; Heather Turba, Michelle May, Adrianne & Stacy Jackson. She is further survived by her grandparents; Jack (Sharon) Rief and Ray & Carolyn Diem all of Kiel. Aunts and Uncles; Bill (Sue) Rief, Sue (Mike) Wusterbarth, Steve (Leslie) Diem, Jim Diem, Debbie (Eugene) Kutz-Falle, Dan (Brenda) Krueger, Sara (Timm) Amundson, Her special niece, Alicia and cousins; Stephanie, Theresa, Jacqueline, Emily, Breanna, Taylor, Peyton, Michelle, Morgan, Natalie, Jason, Josh, Jeanna, Jenna, Shaun, Cheyenne and Sierra. Amy is further survived by many close family and friends, her extended military family and all those she touched throughout the years. David Mercer officiating. Burial will take place in Schleswig Cemetery, Town of Schleswig (Rockville). Family and friends may call at Kiel High School on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the High School from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. A Memorial has been established in SSG Amy Kruegers’ name at Citizens Bank, 514 Fremont St. Kiel. SSG Krueger gave us her all. She made the ultimate sacrifice.
KIEL (WKOW) — A public visitation is set for Friday, November 13 at Kiel High School.
Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Amy Krueger was one of two Wisconsin soldiers killed last week at Fort Hood, Texas.
Krueger’s parents released the following statement to the media.
“We would like to thank everyone for the truly amazing outpouring of love and support you have given our family. Not only all of you here in our hometown, but from those of you across the nation. We can feel your embrace.
Amy was a wonderful daughter. She was always so strong, determined and powerful. She would set her goals and achieve them usually accomplishing two or three at a time.
We are so grateful that God chose us to give her life because she truly was a gift to ours.
Amy was highly competitive in all sports. From middle school until just prior to her recent deployment she competed in basketball, swimming, volleyball, softball and pool.
She was always available to friends and family. Through her own care and support was an exceptional role model, not only to her many cousins and her niece, but to all who met her.
Her smile would light up any room, her energy would envelope all of those around her. It is that smile and that energy that keeps us going throughout this difficult time. Carry on, our brave soldier.”

Kiel — A woman from Kiel and a man from Mount Pleasant were two of the 13 people killed Thursday in the shootings at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas, and three others from Wisconsin were injured.
The Veterans Administration hospital in Madison confirmed Friday afternoon that Dorie Carskadon, a social worker and the team leader from the Madison Vet Center, was hurt in the shootings. Officials confirmed earlier Friday that two other soldiers from Wisconsin – Amy Krueger of Kiel and Russell Seager of Mount Pleasant – were killed. Also, Amber Bahr of Random Lake and Grant Moxon of Lodi were injured.
Kiel High School Principal Dario Talerico said that Krueger, who graduated from the school in 1998, died in the shootings.
Talerico described Krueger as a typical small-town girl who played basketball and softball at the school and was prompted to join the military after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Krueger had a sister and a brother who attended the high school and a large extended family in Kiel.
Talerico said few staffers remain at the 500-student school who worked there when Krueger was a student, but Krueger was considered a hero who appeared in the local newspaper, talking about her military experiences.
“I know she was proud to serve and proud to share her experience,” Talerico said. “She took pride that she was able to serve her country.”
Carrie Marie Senkbeil, who went to high school with Krueger, said she found out early Friday morning that her friend had been killed.
“She was one of the best people you could have ever met,” she said.
The two graduated together and later shared an apartment in Sheboygan.
Senkbeil said friends of Krueger were planning to get together later Friday to talk about their friend and the times they spent together. Talerico said Krueger’s death will add a somber note Wednesday morning when students and faculty observe Veterans Day.
“This is someone who walked the hallways and walked across the stage at graduation,” the principal said. “This brings it home to everybody.”
Seager’s uncle confirmed his death.
Larry Seager described his 51-year-old nephew as a “quiet helper” who joined the military a few years ago.
Seager was licensed as a registered nurse and advanced practice nurse prescriber and worked at Zablocki VA Medical Center as a primary caregiver and provided mental health services to patients.
A profile of Seager produced by WUWM-FM in August says he is a nurse from the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee and described his plans to deploy to Iraq.
One of the injured Wisconsin soldiers has a bullet embedded in his leg after the Fort Hood shooting, according to his father.
Dave Moxon is the father of 23-year-old Army Reserve Spc. Grant Moxon of Lodi. Moxon joined the military last year and had arrived at the Texas Army base on Wednesday after training in other states.
The specialist was sitting in the front of a processing room Thursday when he saw the shooter, his father said.
“When the guy started shooting, he could not believe he didn’t get shot in the head,” Dave Moxon said of his son. Moxon said his son pretended to be dead when he was hit in the leg and got out of the room.
Grant Moxon is a mental health specialist who graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, his father said. He was scheduled to visit home for Thanksgiving and then to be deployed to Afghanistan.
Bahr, a soldier from Random Lake, was injured.
Bahr put a tourniquet on a soldier and carried him away from the scene of the Fort Hood shooting before realizing she was shot, according to the commanding officer of the base.
In an interview Friday on NBC’s “Today,” Lt. Gen. Robert Cone relayed a story that Amber Bahr told Cone when he spoke with her Thursday night. Bahr’s family said she was shot in the back and is undergoing tests.
The commander described Bahr as an “amazing young lady.”
“Despite the fact she was shot, she assisted in helping other soldiers,” Cone said.
And a spokesman for the VA Hospital in Madison confirmed Carskadon was injured and noted the area within the VA system in which she worked. The spokesman said he didn’t have additional information about her.
