Day of Peace Community Event 2023

The Highground will recognize the International Day of Peace with the annual “open community” event at noon on Thursday, September 21.

A special presentation, “The International Refugee Story” will be given by Dr. Khalil Dokhanchi, Professor of Political Science in the Department of Social Inquiry at the University of Wisconsin Superior, at noon. To bring awareness of the human cost of war around the globe, Dr. Dokhanchi’s presentation will include history, current situations and the unique struggles which are often unknown to the general public. The Highground will serve light refreshments at this family-friendly gathering.

Dr. Khalil Dokhanchi holds a PhD in Comparative Policy Analysis with a focus on Middle Eastern politics from Binghamton University in New York. He has been faculty at the University of Wisconsin Superior for the past thirty years. His teaching and research has focused on the international relations, international humanitarian law, peace and reconciliation in areas of conflict, and issues of refugee populations around the world. He has led study abroad programs in Bosnia and Herzogovina and Northern Ireland. Each year his students, in collaboration with the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross, hold an interactive exhibit, Refugee for 50 Minutes: From Afghanistan to Germany.

Note: This is not a political platform, therefore, political views and discussions are not welcome. The focus will be to promote healing and fellowship for all Veterans and non-Veterans and to share in voicing the common goal of peace.

Visit the Museum during your visit to see the Wisconsin Remembers: A Face for Every Name exhibit which will be on display at the Museum.
