The Highground will honor and bring recognition to the struggles of refugees past and present during the annual International Day of Peace event on, Thursday, September 21, beginning at noon. This is a family-friendly event.

Dr. Khalil Dokhanchi, Professor and Dept. Chair, Social Inquiry Department, University of Wisconsin-Superior, will present an educational and intriguing discussion and interactive exhibition on the global refugee reality. Many important refugee stories and consequences of war across the globe do not hit the mainstream media headlines. The complicated journeys and often unpublicized “road blocks” to reach safe havens are mostly unknown to the general American public. This discussion and exhibition will unveil this often unrecognized issue. The public is invited to join The Highground for this educational event. Dr. Dokhanchi’s presentation may interest those whose ancestors were refugees of warn-torn countries, abroad or within the U.S.

Dr. Dokhanchi is involved in leading educational efforts on: Peacebuilding in post-conflict societies with an emphasis on education and refugees; international humanitarian law; and war and peace in Bosnia, Northern Ireland and the Middle East. He teaches a number of courses including Paths to Peace, Theories of War and Peace and International Law and War and Peace. He also co-teaches Seminar in Peace-Building. Along with Karl Bahm, Dr. Dokhanchi developed the War and Peace in Bosnia and Northern Ireland Study Abroad programs. These programs take students to Bosnia during the months of May and June every odd year and to Northern Ireland every even year.

The presentation will conclude with a talking circle which invites visitors to bring a photo or a brief story of their refugee ancestor(s) to be honored and remembered.
