Army Cpl. Justin D. Ross, 22, of Green Bay, Wis., died March 26 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by small arms fire. He was assigned to the 863rd Engineer Battalion, Wausau, Wis. He was posthumously promoted to corporal.

Justin Ross was born Sept. 14, 1988, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., the son of Rev. Ronald and Deborah Ross. The Green Bay, Wis., native enlisted in the Army reserves in 2006. He graduated from Port Bay High School in 2007 and Universal Technical Institute in 2009.

Ross joined the military Oct. 26, 2007. He was deployed with the 428th out of Wausau, Wis., on Aug. 20, 2010, as a Combat Engineer, to work in route clearance in Afghanistan and had been in Afghanistan since October. His unit was scheduled to return between August and September.

"Justin's unit had high praise for their fallen brother," said Lt. Col. Nathan Banks of the 364th Public Affairs Operations Center. “He was an outstanding soldier. He loved to be in the Army and he loved what he did and he loved working with his fellow soldiers."
