Marine Lance Cpl. Andrew G. Matus, 19, of Chetek, Wis., died January 21, 2007, from wounds received while conducting combat operations in Anbar province, Iraq. He was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), I Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Pendleton, California.

He was born Sept. 14, 1987, in Rice Lake, to Gary and Donna (Jurecki) Matus. Andrew was a 2005 graduate of Weyerhaeuser High School and entered the Marine Corps in July 2005, following his dream of becoming a Marine. He was deployed to Iraq in late 2006.

Andrew loved to hunt and fish, and he loved the outdoors. He was creative and inventive with his hands in all things mechanical, and he enjoyed weightlifting.

“Handy Andy” dreamed of being a Marine since he was 12 years old, and no one was going to influence him differently. Andrew served his country courageously and with strong pride. Andrew’s family is very proud of him for following his dream to be a Marine.

Andrew comes from a family with a strong military background. His grandfather, Edward Matus, was in the United States Army. His grandmother, Virginia Matus, was in the Army WAC. His father Gary, uncle Dennis, and aunt Diane were all in the Army, along with his late great-uncle Charles Matus. Dennis served in the Vietnam War. Andrew’s cousins, Todd Miller and Troy Brower, were in the Air Force and Army National Guard, respectively.
