Experience The Highground’s three-day retreat or a day of ice fishing

Veterans show off their catches ice fishing during the 2025 retreat

Shake the winter blues and discover a new appreciation for winter in the company of fellow veterans at The Highground’s Winter Veterans Retreat scheduled for January 16-18, 2026. The colder and shorter days of winter present challenges for many individuals and even more so for veterans managing PTS (post-traumatic stress). This three-day retreat welcomes both male and female veterans to experience indoor and outdoor therapeutic recreational activities to put the enjoyment back into the cold season and to better help manage PTS.

The scheduled retreat activities include ice fishing, snowshoeing, PTS growth workshops, art instruction, good food and camaraderie. Outdoor activities will be dependent on weather conditions. The retreat will take place at The Highground and surrounding areas.

Veterans who are registered for the three-day retreat will have lodging arrangements made at a local motel as part of their reservation. Retreat registration is required by December 31, 2025. A $50 “Save My Space” fee is required, which will be reimbursed to the veteran when they arrive at the retreat.

Veterans who are unable to attend the entire three-day retreat are invited to join a day of ice fishing on Saturday, January 17. Registration for ice fishing is still required by December 31, but this activity does not include a “save my space” fee. There is a limit on how many veterans can be accommodated who do not have their own equipment, so veterans are encouraged to register early.

This should be the Free Fishing Weekend in Wisconsin, but The Highground will confirm that after the holidays. If it’s not the free fishing weekend, The Highground will provide veterans who don’t have a license with instructions on how to get one.

To register for the three-day Winter Veterans Retreat or the single day of ice fishing, veterans can email Theresa at museum@thehighground.org or call 715-743-4224 before December 31, 2025.

The Highground is grateful to Borton Construction for sponsoring this retreat.
